In India, as leprosy was considered to be a social stigma, Dr. Samant’s
journey
is saga of struggle… saga of positivity and determination… saga of great
vigor
in mind and heart…
He did not worked for the sake of awards & rewards but for the satisfaction
of
his inner soul. It is not an easy task to run the 80 bed hospital totally
free
since last 48 years.
Seed of Empathy: Dr. Jagdish Devrao Samant was born in a village where
Leprosy, Poverty & Illiteracy were rampant. No leprosy patient was
treated
by any doctor in the village and they were left to their fate only.
After passing his MBBS, he started visiting Arnala on weekly to treat
these
below poverty line people free of charge which was continued till his
last
breath at his age of 83.
Initially, Dr. Samant started treating patients under a shadow of a tree
and
a broken table, and was supported by a number of friends.
In 1956, he saw a leprosy affected person (Sh. Bhulan Mhatre) at the road
side who was driven out of the house. He carried the person to the
outhouse
of his farm, cleaned his wounds and treated him for 20 years thereafter
and
re-united him with his family.
Borivali slum work: Besides his General Practice at Goregaon, Mumbai for
livelihood, Dr. Samant worked in a big slums between Dahisar & Borivali
(1961 to 1970) with the sisters of ‘Helpers of Mary’.
He served free treatment to leprosy patients there.
Further provided them with medicines from his own pocket, and used his
good
rapport with authorities to solve the problems of basic
amenities
like drinking water, street lights, ration card, lavatories through his
good
rapport with authorities.
